Bourbonese Qualk: Kneejerk Reaction (Praxis 2)

Praxis 2 – Bourbonese Qualk – Knee-Jerk Reaction EP on Soundcloud

Recorded in the summer 1992, this was actually the first Praxis record to be “officially” released. This happened in the last week of November, one week before Scaremonger was released. This was more a decision of the distributor, S.R.D., who thought it would be better to launch the label with the release of a more well known act.

Both releases had been on white label for a few months.

In the case of Praxis 2 the white label and the finished release are actually two different cuts. The reason for this is that the B2 track was jumping on some turntables, so I decided to recut it, which was done by Simon at The Exchange.

This release and the next as well as the following album Autonomia (Praxis 5) represent the relatively short “techno” period of Bourbonese Qualk. Qualk was at that point Simon Crab solo and I guess infected a bit by my enthusiasm for the new noisy techno styles.

N.I.R. Studio was the squat in Malt Street where in a short street which was squatted in its entirety Simon and his family had two small houses, one of which they lived in, the other served as rehearsal space and studio. Soon the ground floor became Praxis HQ.

You can find a blog post by Transpontine about this corner here.

Original label info (1993)
This is their first ever 12″ single after going strong in the european electronic underground for a long time with countless multimedia live performances all over western and eastern europe, and more recently the united states. 4 brilliant tracks, slightly acidic with a definite hardcore/industrial feel, and a trancy slow chillout track at the end. take control now!

‘acidic stomping and heavy dance music for the headstrong. search again.’ (Technohead in DJ)
‘…predominantly monochrome acid trance – but like if Hannibal Lecter had got hold of a 303…’ (Echoes)
#…success etched in every groove. It explodes into life in a ruthlessly efficient manner proving that B.Q. are true masters of a beast of a machine. Totally wired up to the forces of fury… unyielding, eclectic and bursting with tension … this band is still thrusting forwards, carving a niche with one fuckin’ metallic head opener of a 12″ blade. World domination beckons.’ (Chris B. in Music from the Empty Quarter, march ’93)

Scaremonger: Soon We All Will Have Special Names (Praxis 1X)

Praxis 1X
Scaremonger Remixes (Lagowski/Ubik, Bourbonese Qualk, DJ NoDoz)
1993

Praxis 1x consists of remixes of the A1 track from the Scaremonger EP (Praxis 1), the A-side was a collaboration of Andrew Lagowski and Dave Ubik. This became a bit of a “club hit” and was featured on the “Eurobeat 2000 Club Classics album on Kickin Records alongside such “techno anthems” as Dave Clarke’s Red 2, Amphetamine by Thomas Heckmann, Sprung aus den Wolken by DJ Hell etc.

The other side are two more remixes of the same track, a hypnotic rework by Bourbonese Qualk, and a dry minimal acid mix by DJ NoDoz.

This was also released as a DJ Promo with the same labels as with Praxis 3,4,6 and 8.

The official release was some time in spring 1993.
The DJ Promo pressings with the orange camo labels were usually 250 copies, finished release (probably) 1000.

Label info from 1993:
‘3 completely different remixes of the “Soon we all will have Special Names” track from the Scaremonger EP, all considerably faster, some arguably madder, and definitely kickass! The Lagowski/Dave Ubik remix has a hard grooving industrial feel, the Bourbonese Qualk remix will blow your mind all over the place, and the NoDoz remix does what too much caffeine does to you…’

And the press said:
‘Bourbonese Qualk hit a nasty cruise missile rotor vamp which sometimes reminds me of Suicide. DJ NoDoz opts for deranged acid babbling and bee-abuse. Lagowski and Ubik collide for a reverbarating, sinisterly embellished speed-march. Fierce label.’ (Echoes)
‘Lagowski/Ubik mix seems to be favorite, being well scary, like driving at pretty high speed through a ghost train pusued by the hihat/handclap monster from planet blip. Gonna have to buy this one now aren’t you!’ (Technohead in DJ Magazine)

Scaremonger: Scaremonger EP

Praxis 1
Scaremonger EP
1992

Written and produced by Christoph Fringeli

Recorded towards the end of 1991, these were mixed down in Basel by Alex Buess and cut at some point in the summer of 1992. There was a white label pre-release of, if my memory serves me, 300 copies. It seems ironic that a completely unknown label could press 300 copies on white label from a even more obscure artist and distribute them, and then press 700 (as was the case with this release) of the “official release” and get rid of them quite quickly, and 20 years later, the same label has to struggle to shift 300 copies of a new release. Different times.

The Scaremonger EP was written strongly under the influence of the new tekno scene that was exploding all around at the time. A kind of sonic geological shift was happening, and records from producers like Underground Resistance, Mescalinum United or The Hypnotist definitely influenced this, but at the same time it wasn’t made to emulate their work, but to transgress it…

The original label info said: ‘Hard rhythmic electronics with layers of noises and eclectic sampling will please the headstrong and outrage the fearsome. 4 tracks: “soon we all will have special names”, “is there someone inside you”, “random” & “adios motherfucker”.’

‘Ferocious stomping circuit abuse with squelchy electronic nightmares building in berserk layers’ (Kris Needs in Echoes, where the Scaremonger EP was also number 1 in the Techno charts!)
‘…four slabs of mountainous sounds reaching new peaks in sonic collision. Masses of twisted samples colliding with pummeling repetitive beats, producing an instantly impressive noise and a short sharp shock to the thinking listeners cerebral core. Hardcore in the house, in the pace, in your area – there’s no escape from the devastating well rounded first release on the newly formed Praxis label. A winner.’ (Chris B. in The Empty Quarter)

Here’s another review, this time from Soft Watch zine – we’re quoting from a post on the discogs page here, this review is missing from our archive. If someone can supply a scan or more infos (which issue of Soft Watch etc), please get in touch.

PRAXIS are obviously setting out to muscle in on a surprisingly neglected corner of the Dance market. I’m not sure what you’d term it – the next-door-neighbour of EBM, nodding acquaintance to Hardcore & drinking buddy of Torture Tech. “Soon We Will Have Special Names” is a fast, dense dance piece using a minimum of vocal samples (the title spoken) and a maximum of variety & experimentation. It’s a surprisingly colourful instrumental, as much for the head as the body. “Is There Someone Inside You” continues in a very familiar frame, having a Rap logic without the words. Instead it has layer upon layer of music, a veritable puzzle box of sound & structure without appearing in the least crowded. It drives along yet absorbs the listener. “Random” opens the second side, with a similar leaning towards the experimental. This one is less dense, giving space to odd construction & a myriad musical samples without sounding as if they have ripped off other records or copped-out for too many ‘punctuations’ – they are not over showy, relying instead on ability & interesting composition. “Adios Motherfucker” starts off with odd out-of-control lunatic synthetics before settling into another danceable sound showcase which uses samples, instead of letting the samplers do all the work.
They fall into the arena of dance music, perhaps even House or Rave or what have you, but unlike their EBM brothers, they inject a certain warmth into the cold technological sound. And having done so, they could make many friends. A tasty EP – enough variety to satisfy the most ravenous, and to raise interest in the most Jaded. (Soft Watch)

Praxis News for July 2012

The Party at Subversiv and New Releases

First of all a big thanks to everybody who played and to everybody who partied on June 9 at our party at Subversiv! For us it was the best party in a long time and a success both artistically and in so far that about 250 euro were raised for the printing (and other) cost for the forthcoming 12th issue of datacide.

You can find some cool pics of the party here:

http://www.photophunk.com/archiv/2012_06_09_subversiv/index.php

The party was of course not only a fundraiser, but also the release party of the latest two praxis releases:

Praxis 49 – Bulkrate: In the Temple of the Serpent

Praxis 50 – Electric Kettle: News from Berlin

Also just out is:

DM12004 – V/A: Accretion EP from Darkmatter Soundsystem featuring tracks by Minion, Fiend, Poxxe, Resurrector and Baseck, which is exclusively distributed by Praxis.

all releases come with download codes for free high quality downloads from our bandcamp site, where you can also buy just the files if you don't care about the vinyl.

New Praxis Online Shop
The Praxis Online store is getting a complete makeover and will be launched in the next few days in early July! The shop is completely re-designed both graphically as well as running on a different software. In terms of content there are many more audio snippets as well as embedded bandcamp players or youtube/vimeo etc clips. In general there will be a lot more information about the different items. Hundreds of new scans and snippets have been added and a lot of prices have been slashed!

Please send a mail to datacide@c8.com

Praxis 20 years anniversary

At the end of November and the beginning of December 1992 the first two releases on Praxis were officially released. This means the label turns 20 this autumn!

We are currently in the process of organizing a few events to celebrate this – again, if you’re interested, please get in touch (praxis party and datacide event could also be combined!).

Next releases?

We have many new releases in the pipeline but not the funds to realize them as quickly as we would like to – Help us by ordering Praxis records directly from our shop, downloads from our bandcamp site and support datacide by taking out a subscription!

We’d like to hear from you:

Give us feedback about the new releases, the new shop, your encounters with Praxis over the last 20 years.

Void News Spring 2012

The latest news from our friends in CA, as we’re waiting for the arrival of the new Darkmatter 12″ this week!
Void News Spring 2012

It’s a very exciting year at Void Tactical.  In the last few months we’ve seen several excellent, well received releases, the return of JStat to live performance, and two of our most successful parties to date.  As more and more of our crew collects around the SFBay, our network has really come together to yield a lot of exciting activity.  Read on to see what we’ve been getting into, and where we are
headed.

In this update…

+ Void Tactical + Darkmatter joint parties in SF and LA were a huge success!
+ VTCL002  Dimentia with Split Horizon split 12″, available for listen and preorder!
+ WMX’s first official release, FS007 – Machine Vision – FREE DOWNLOAD
+ FS006 – Dimentia – A Dream Manifested also out now…
+ New Void Tactical Tshirt design
+ STATIC dj night coming up in 2 weeks (SFBAY)
+ Tons of upcoming releases…  and plans for our first European Tour.
+ Get involved… and get some free stickers!

— Void Tactical Media presents Darkmatter Soundsystem // Darkmatter Soundsystem
presents Void Tactical Media

Our party in San Francisco just a couple of weeks was probably one of our best to date.  Dimentia set the gears in motion, and swept through our favorite Bayshore location, clearing out and decking out the space (thanks in large part to Key) in signature style.  With bomb sound provided by Havoc, we packed the spot for hours of broken bass and hard electronics featuring Darkmatter Soundsystem artists Sonic Death Rabbit, Diskore, Fiend with WMX, Dimentia, Split Horizon, Additiv, and Key.
As if that wasn’t enough, we packed a second room with Xanopticon, Intoner,
Heartworm, Jack Clang, Rytpe, and The Stapler.   A full house, no doubt.. and packed with our excellent community of friends and supporters.

Then, just a little under two weeks later we were off to LA for the sister show, this time with Darkmatter hooking up the space and sound and hosting for the return of JStat.  We hadn’t heard a set from JStat for over 2 years, but he picked up right where he left off rocking the headliner slot with a set that had people falling
over… literally.  And who could expect less, with a lineup stacked with WMX,
Dimentia, Baseck, Split Horizon, Diskore vs. Fiend, and Minion vs. Resurrector you
knew the sound was gonna be large.   Huge thanks to LA and friends new and old for
making this out best journey down the coast yet.  We can’t wait for the next time!

— VTCL002 is here!

One of the most exciting parts of our trip to LA was the opportunity to pick up Void’s next vinyl, the second on the Void Tactical Media imprint.  A split 12″ between Dimentia and Split Horizon, it feels amazing to have this project become a reality.  Dimentia heads up the A side with two of his signature broken bass tracks and his first to hit vinyl.  On the flip, Split Horizon offers up the final 2 Stormwave tracks to complete what he started with VTCL001, the split with Jstat in 2008.   Tracks are available for a listen at
http://soundcloud.com/voidtacticalmedia/sets/vtcl002-preview/  and the vinyl can be preordered now at http://voidtacticalmedia.org/shortlist.php .  If you’re thinking about picked it up, grab a copy now cause it makes the mailing much easier on us! This high quality cut also features hand screened sleeves, a poster by Dimentia, and
an essay by Split Horizion.

— WMX FS007 – Machine Vision available for Free Download!

May has marked an absolute flood of releases, and this is one that should not be missing.   His first official release, WMX’s Machine Vision mixes the austere digital sonics of a destroyed world with a funky, tongue in cheek dance floor vibe, WMX knows how to rock the party.  After seeing him consistently throw down at Darkmatter, Void Tactical, and SPAZ parties we knew it was time to get his music out.  On MACHINE VISION, WMX weaves elegantly detailed, sharp broken programming into a dark, yet playful, perspective on current technological development.   The first half of an audio diptych, WMX invites us to place electronic music squarely in the context of the quickening development of intelligent machines, and both their military and civilian uses.  We all know that, at least in part, our fascination with electronic music stems from questioning the changing definition of humanity. So WMX lets us in on his secret:  you can engage some serious critique, but also
keep it fun and have a great party.

Ck his sonics at http://soundcloud.com/voidtacticalmedia/sets/fs007-wmx-machine-vision/ and grab the download while you are at it.   If you like what you find, consider throwing a few coins to Void at http://voidtacticalmedia.bandcamp.com/ for full quality waves, and help keep the digital label rolling along!

— FS006 – Dimentia – A Dream Manifested is also out, and it’s excellent…

As though we haven’t already covered enough ground for one update, there’s still a lot more talk about it and Dimentia’s first digital release on Form and Structure is one important release.  One of Void Tactical Media’s most crucial artists and collaborators, Dimentia presents here two tracks of serious sonic sculpture and dancefloor mayhem. In A Dream Manifested, Dimentia hones waves of chaos into a unparalleled broken bass noise and electro onslaught. With Xanopticon stepping in
again on the final mix and mastering, this sonic delivery is targeted for dancefloor and forest floor alike.   Already our best received digital release to date, lend this one an ear at http://soundcloud.com/voidtacticalmedia/sets/fs006-dimentia-a-dream/ or do the full quality dance at http://voidtacticalmedia.bandcamp.com/album/a-dream-manifested

— New Void Tactical Media tshirt now available!

Check our shortlist distro ( http://voidtacticalmedia.org/shortlist.php once again) for images of our new Tshirt design, a collaboration between Key and Split Horizon. We can print in all sizes, so just let us know which you’d like.  Features our Power Ladder graphic, created as a visual representation of the value of collaboration, on a fashion fitted tshirt.  Preorder now, and we’ll be shipping in about a week and a half.

— STATIC DJ night coming up in 2 weeks, Oakland, CA

While some of us were busy in LA, Carlos Oblivion (aka Additiv) was busy concocting his next adventure in DJ night mayhem.   A continuation of his exploits in Europe, STATIC gives Void Tactical DJ’s a platform to stretch out and combine our own sound with an eclectic mix of GOOD MUSIC.   We’ve set this one up to include Intoner, Nemeton, and Moire (her first appearance DJing).  It’ll be a great time, so if if you’re in the Bay come on out and gets social with the crew.

— What’s next????

This newsletter is already out of control, so let’s just hit this really quickly. What we have on our hands here is a veritable FLOOD of material that needs to be heard.   The next couple of months will see additional Form and Structure releases from WMX and Dimentia as well as Killx8, Split Horizon, Additiv, and others ( that we can’t yet announce).   We’ve also got Jstat’s Live at Breakcore Pancakes set now available for download and hard copy pre-order, and the Adjust live set still waiting in the wings.   Probably most exciting, however, is news of our quickly coming together Europrean tour.  Split Horizon and Dimentia will be hitting Europe around September, spreading our sounds, and looking for international collaborators.

— Get Involved

If you like what you’re hearing, now is a great time to lend a hand as we extend extend our capabilities and concepts.   If you’ve got radio stations, podcasts, or blogs where you’d like to hear broken bass music, or think our sounds would be a match, get in touch with the details and we’ll send them our audio.  We are also working to expand our european connections, so if you can help make the connex give us a shout!   And yes, rumors are true we do have some new stickers and we’ve giving them out for free.  If you send a SASE to 1622 11th Street, Oakland, CA 94607 we’ll send some of this one http://www.voidtacticalmedia.org/images/VTM-StickerWebBIG.jpg
The effects of our efforts are only as great as the depth of our network, and we deeply value all those that have been with us from the beginning and remain equally open and excited to meet new allies to the project of musical discourse.
